Free-agent wide receiver ’s agent, Dave Rich, told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Tuesday that all charges against his client in a shoplifting case were dropped due to a case of mistaken identity.

Prince William County (Virginia) Police Sgt. Jonathan L. Perok released the following statement explaining the situation and exonerating Whitehead: Whitehead was released by the Dallas Cowboys on Monday after it was alleged that he failed to appear in court to face a larceny charge stemming from a June incident in Virginia, per ESPN.com.

Rich told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Whitehead wasn’t in Virginia at the time of the incident.

Per ESPN.com, Whitehead’s plane ticket showed he was in Dallas at the time of the alleged theft, cheap nfl jerseys which occurred at a Wawa convenience store. Whitehead’s flight then landed in Washington, D.C., 10 hours after the incident.

Although Whitehead denied any involvement, the Cowboys decided to part ways with him, and head coach Jason Garrett explained the decision:

“In handling the situation and evaluating with the authorities there and in talking to him, we just didn’t feel like it’s in the best interest of the Cowboys to have him with us. We’ve got a track record of being able to take guys that made some mistakes early on in their career and they get better. They grow and they develop and they become great citizens and great players. We have a number of those guys on our team right now.”

The 25-year-old Whitehead is a Virginia native who spent the past two seasons with the Cowboys.
